JSW Steel, India’s leading steel producer, has teamed up with carbon capture solutions provider Carbon Clean and Australian mining company BHP to expedite the deployment of carbon capture technology for decarbonizing steel production. The collaboration follows the signing of a joint study agreement between the three companies.
As part of this agreement, the feasibility of Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC modular technology will be evaluated to capture up to 100,000 tons of CO2 annually, marking the largest deployment of this technology in the steel industry. This initiative is a significant move towards scaling up carbon capture efforts. The joint studies are set to be completed by 2026, after which the installation of CycloneCC will be considered at JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka. JSW Steel plans to liquefy the captured CO2 for local sale if successful.
Aniruddha Sharma, Chair and CEO of Carbon Clean, stated that the company’s innovative CycloneCC modular solution is designed to commercialize carbon capture technology and promote its widespread adoption fully.
