The heads of eleven German federal states, led by Saarland and Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), sent a joint letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The letter calls for increasing the use of low-emission steel in automotive manufacturing and establishing a regulatory link between the steel and automotive sectors.
Commenting on this development, Kerstin Maria Rippel, Managing Director of the German Steel Federation (WStahl), stated:
“ The initiative by the heads of government of the Steel Alliance countries sends a strong signal to the European Commission. Clean steel lies at the heart of a sustainable industrial base in Germany and Europe. To safeguard this position and make industry climate-neutral, we need market-based incentives across the entire European value chain, starting with the key sectors.”
Rippel also emphasized that allowing the CO₂ savings achieved through certified low-emission steel to be included in the fleet balance of car manufacturers would be an effective tool to achieve this goal. She noted that this would simultaneously support competitiveness, industrial value creation and climate protection.
Highlighting that the steel industry on the ground is ready to contribute, Rippel added:
“What is needed now is a regulatory framework that supports these investments and consistently aligns the strategies of the domestic steel and automotive industries.”
