Rocky Mountain Steel Mills, U.S. manufacturer of engineering steels for the railway and industrial sectors, has begun hot commissioning at the new Danieli universal rail mill established in Pueblo, Colorado. The facility operates under Orion Steel.

Rocky Mountain Steel Mills launched advanced rail manufacturing facility in Pueblo

The new rail mill is designed with an annual production capacity of 650,000 short tons of high quality rail. The facility will be capable of producing flat-bottom, heavy duty rails up to 100 meters in length, with weights of up to 88 kg/m and hardness reaching 425 BHN. All products will comply with AREMA specifications, meeting the technical requirements for heavy haul and high speed railway applications.

During the commissioning process, critical technological units including the billet grinding mill (BDM), tandem reversing mill (UFR), cooling bed, and horizontal and vertical straighteners are being tested. The facility, where hot trials are ongoing, is reported to be progressing according to the planned start-up schedule.

The rail mill incorporates Danieli’s latest solutions in rolling, automation, and process control, making it one of the most advanced rail production centers in North America. With this new investment, Rocky Mountain Steel Mills is expected to strengthen its position in the U.S. market for long, high quality rails.
