Italy’s steel production returned to y-o-y decline in November following a four-month recovery trend. According to data from the Italian steel producers’ association Federacciai, total crude steel output fell by 2.8% y-o-y to 1.8 million tonnes, bringing the growth streak recorded between July and October to an end.
Despite the November contraction, Italy’s steel sector maintained a positive overall trend over the first eleven months of the year. Total production in the January–November period reached 19.3 million tonnes, up 2.5% y-o-y compared with the same period in 2024.
Divergence widens in hot-rolled products
Contrasting trends among hot-rolled product categories remained evident in November, with long products continuing to expand while flat products slipped back into decline.
Long product output totaled 1.1 million tonnes in November, marking a 7.2% y-o-y increase. Although the pace of growth moderated slightly, the upward trend was sustained. Over the first eleven months of the year, long product production rose 4.7% y-o-y to 11.5 million tonnes, approaching the full-year 2024 total of 11.6 million tonnes.
By contrast, flat product output weakened further. November production stood at 709,000 tonnes, down 5.2% y-o-y. Nevertheless, cumulative flat product output for the January–November period increased 3.8% y-o-y to 8.3 million tonnes.
