ArcelorMittal to increase global renewable energy capacity to 3.3 GW with three new projects in India

ArcelorMittal announced that it will develop three new renewable energy projects in India with a total nominal solar and wind capacity of 1 GW.

ArcelorMittal to increase global renewable energy capacity to 3.3 GW with three new projects in India

Once completed, the company’s renewable energy capacity in India will double to 2 GW, while its global renewable energy capacity will increase to 3.3 GW.

According to the company statement, the projects cover solar, wind and energy storage systems. A 36 MW solar power project to be built in Amaravati, in the state of Maharashtra, is planned to be completed in the first half of 2027. In Bikaner, Rajasthan, a project comprising a 400 MW solar power plant together with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system will be commissioned, with completion expected in the first half of 2028. The third project, to be developed in the Bachau region of Gujarat, will include 250 MW of wind power, 300 MW of solar power and a 300 MWh integrated battery storage system, and is also targeted for completion in the first half of 2028.

Once all three projects become operational, the total annual carbon emissions savings are expected to reach approximately 1.6 million tons. The Amaravati project is projected to save 0.04 million tons per year, the Bikaner project 0.65 million tons and the Bachau project 0.9 million tons of CO₂ annually.

Total capital expenditure for the projects is expected to be around USD 0.9 billion, and the electricity generated will be supplied to AMNS India. AMNS India operates as an India based steelmaking joint venture with a 60 percent stake held by ArcelorMittal and a 40 percent stake by Nippon Steel.

Commenting on the projects, ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal stated that these investments double the company’s renewable energy capacity in India and aim to ensure a secure and clean energy supply for steel production operations. He emphasized that the company will continue to invest in sustainable and economically strong projects, showing that climate responsibility and business performance can progress together.

In addition to ArcelorMittal’s three new projects, AMNS India also announced that it is developing its own renewable energy project. This project, to be implemented in Bachau, will have a total capacity of 550 MW, comprising 300 MW of solar power and 250 MW of wind power. The investment is expected to deliver annual CO₂ savings of around 0.9 million tons.

Together with ArcelorMittal’s first 1 GW renewable energy project in India, which began supplying clean energy to AMNS India earlier this year, it is estimated that once all projects are completed, around 35 percent of the electricity demand of AMNS India’s steelmaking facilities in Hazira will be met from renewable sources. This estimate is based on projected energy consumption after AMNS India reaches an annual steel production capacity of 15 million tons by 2028. With all projects in operation, total annual CO₂ savings are expected to reach approximately 4 million tons.

The company also continues to develop renewable energy projects through joint ventures in Brazil and Argentina. Once all projects in India, Brazil and Argentina are commissioned, ArcelorMittal is expected to reach a total global renewable electricity generation capacity of 3.3 GW.
