EU imports 2.09 million tons of DRI in 9 months

The European Union increased its direct reduced iron (DRI) imports by 3.1% to 2.09 million tonnes in January-September 2024 compared to the same period last year.

According to Eurostat data, the main importers of direct reduced iron among EU countries identified Italy, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in particular.

Italy imported 513.58 thousand tons of DRI in the first nine months of 2024, decreasing by 26.4% y/y. Germany recorded a 15,4% decrease to 438.45 thousand tons. Belgium's imports decreased by 26.4% to 189.95 thousand tons. The Netherlands' imports increased from only 66.67 thousand tons in January-September 2024 to 282.32 thousand tons in the same period of this year. Meanwhile, Spain also recorded an increase of 6.9%.

The EU's largest supplier of DRI imports, Russia exported 789.6 kt of DRI to Europe in January-September, decreasing by 17.4% y/y. Libya exported 400.14 tons of DRI to the EU in the 9-month period, increasing by 9.3% y/y. Venezuela, on the other hand, exported 233.29 tons to the EU in the same period, increasing by 82.1% y/y.

EU imported 179.03 tons of DRI in September 2024, a decrease of 20.4% y/y and 17.8% m/m.
