EU DRI imports increase in the January-June period

According to data from the European Statistics Office (Eurostat), the European Union (EU) imported 1.35 million tonnes of direct reduced iron (DRI) in the first half of 2024, increased by 0.4% y/y.

Germany, the top importer in the period, saw its imports decrease by 1.1% y/y to 342,450 tonnes, followed by Italy with a 30.7% drop to 338,890 tonnes, the Netherlands with a 344% increase to 122,100 tonnes and Belgium with a 42.4% decrease to 105,810 tonnes.

EU imports most DRI from Russia

Russia remains the EU's largest DRI supplier, with Russian companies exporting 579,170 tonnes of DRI to the EU in the January-June period, although this represents a 14.4% decrease from the previous year. Italy was the largest buyer of Russian DRI with 314,260 tonnes.

Libya and Venezuela were also among the important suppliers. Libya's exports decreased by 5.3% to 245,430 tonnes, while Venezuela's exports decreased by 29.9% to 64,380 tonnes.

In June, total EU DRI imports reached 164,930 tonnes, decreased by 18.4% y/y. Total EU DRI imports in 2023 were recorded at 2.61 million tonnes, decreased by 11% y/y, while in December 2023 imports increased by 19.9% m/m and by 146.5% y/y.
