Commercial Metals Company launches new net zero emission rebar

Commercial Metals Company (CMC), a US-based manufacturer of rebar, is introducing a line of rebar products called RebarZero that possess net-zero greenhouse gas emissions. CMC has taken measures to ensure that these products remain carbon neutral throughout the entire production and delivery process, encompassing scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

CMC has developed electric arc furnaces (EAF) to produce the rebar, resulting in emissions that are 63% lower compared to industry averages. By implementing the EAF technology, the company significantly reduces scope 1 and 3 emissions right from the start. Any remaining emissions are offset through carbon offsets, while scope 2 emissions are addressed using renewable energy credits (RECs). Moreover, the manufacturing of the new rebar relies entirely on 100% renewable energy.
