CANACERO welcomed the tariff reform strengthening Spain’s steel industry

The Mexican National Chamber of the Iron and Steel Industry (CANACERO) described as a positive step the approval by Congress of the reform initiative to the General Import and Export Tax Law (LIGIE) proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, which предусматриes higher tariffs on imports from countries with which Mexico does not have trade agreements, including steel products, across several sectors.

CANACERO welcomed the tariff reform strengthening Spain’s steel industry

This reform comes at a time when the sector has suffered severe losses in recent years. Since the United States began applying Section 232 tariffs, Mexico’s steel exports to the US have fallen by 80%. At the same time, domestic production and consumption have also declined sharply, reaching historic lows in the January–October 2025 period compared with the same period in 2004. CANACERO emphasizes that unfair trade practices are among the main causes of this situation.

The approved tariff increases are viewed by industry representatives as a critical tool to strengthen national production, encourage import substitution, and increase domestic value added. This approach is also aligned with the objectives set out in the government’s MIC Plan.

CANACERO thanked the Mexican Government, and in particular President Claudia Sheinbaum, who supported the reform through the Ministry of Economy, stating that the new tariffs are consistent with trade policies in North America and represent an important step toward genuine regional integration based on tariff-free trade.

The statement also noted that CANACERO is fully prepared to work with the government on developing additional measures needed to make this policy to protect the steel sector even more effective.
