Automotive Market Contracts Sharply: Sales Fall 20% in August

Türkiye’s automotive market recorded a notable contraction in August. Passenger car and light commercial vehicle sales fell by 20.28% year on year, while the decline in passenger car sales exceeded 25%.

Automotive Market Contracts Sharply: Sales Fall 20% in August

According to data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD), Türkiye’s passenger car and light commercial vehicle market totalled 81,031 units in August 2026.

The overall market contracted by 20.28% compared with August 2025.

Passenger car sales fall 25%

The contraction was most pronounced in the passenger car segment.

Passenger car sales fell by 25.16% year on year to 61,529 units in August.

The light commercial vehicle market, however, followed a different trend. Sales increased by 0.34% to 19,502 units during the same period.

The decline in passenger car sales was therefore the main factor behind the sharp contraction in the overall market.

Market remains above long term averages

Despite the year on year decline in August, the market remained above its long term averages.

The passenger car and light commercial vehicle market was 4.4% higher than the five year average for August.

Passenger car sales were 2.3% above the five year average, while light commercial vehicle sales were 11.6% higher.

Compared with the 10 year average for August, the overall market was 23.9% higher.

Market also contracts in the first eight months

The automotive market also continued to decline during the first eight months of the year.

Between January and August 2026, the combined passenger car and light commercial vehicle market contracted by 11.91% to 719,996 units.

During the same period:

  • Passenger car sales: down 13.78% to 564,241 units
  • Light commercial vehicle sales: down 4.40% to 155,755 units

Automotive sector focuses on the remaining months of the year

The August figures showed a significant slowdown in Türkiye’s automotive market in 2026, following the strong sales performance recorded last year.

The decline of more than 25% in passenger car sales was particularly notable for the overall market outlook.

Sales trends during the remaining months of the year will be closely monitored to determine whether the contraction in the automotive sector is temporary or developing into a more persistent trend.
