India's coal production nears FY24 target

India's coal production from April to February of the current fiscal year reached 880.72 million tonnes (MT), leaving it just 119.28 MT short of its target of 1 billion tonnes for FY24.

India's coal production from April to February of the current fiscal year reached 880.72 million tonnes (MT), leaving it just 119.28 MT short of its target of 1 billion tonnes for FY24.

In the previous fiscal year 2022-23, India produced 893 MT of coal.

The Ministry of Coal reported a 12% increase in cumulative coal production during April-February 2024 compared to the same period in FY23. In February 2024 alone, coal production surged by 12% to 96.60 MT compared to February 2023. State-owned giant Coal India Ltd (CIL) recorded an 8% increase in production in February 2024 compared to the previous year.

Cumulative coal dispatches also rose by over 11% during April-February 2024 compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. In February 2024, coal dispatches grew by 13.63% compared to February 2023. CIL's dispatches in February 2024 were 12% higher than the previous year.

India ranks among the top five coal producers and consumers globally.
