Kürşad Aynas evaluated the anti-dumping decision and its sectoral reflections

Kürşad Aynas, Sales Manager of Çolakoğlu Metallurgy’s Pipe, Profile, and Secondary Producers Segment, evaluated Türkiye’s anti-dumping decision on flat steel products originating from China and South Korea, as well as the potential impact of this measure on the industry.

Kürşad Aynas evaluated the anti-dumping decision and its sectoral reflections

"Import Regulation Will Balance the Domestic Market"

Kürşad Aynas stated: “This decision by Türkiye will to some extent, protect domestic producers against unfair competition. The rates determined at the end of the investigation demonstrate how justified local producers are, showing that cheap and unfair imports have put their production under pressure. With this measure, I believe domestic market dynamics will balance imported products more fairly. Naturally, demand in the domestic market will shift toward local producers, increasing capacity utilization. I particularly expect a increase in capacity utilization at domestic facilities in the cold rolled coil (CRC), galvanized, and coated flat steel segments. For importers, the situation will be somewhat more challenging; this is quite normal, as according to 2024 data, more than 60% of our CRC imports came from these two countries.”

"Competition Will Shift from Lowest Price to Regional Supply Security"

Aynas continued: “Looking at price stability and competitive conditions in the domestic market, I anticipate short-term upward movement, which will provide a breather for our producers. I believe unfair competition in imported goods will be prevented. In the medium term, as domestic production increases and new supply routes are established, the market will find its own balance. The most striking change is in the nature of competition itself. We will no longer see competition based solely on the lowest price, but on ‘regional supply security.’ As Morgan Stanley has also pointed out, global steel trade is evolving from unrestricted free trade toward regionalization, with countries protecting their own industrial bases.”

"Domestic Producers Must Always Be Supported to Boost Exports"

“I also believe this decision will have positive effects on key sectors such as automotive, white goods, and panel production. Steel accounts for around 30% of the cost of a white appliance and approximately 15% of a car. Therefore, domestic market activity and increased production will reduce production costs in these sectors and create opportunities to sell more. Higher production will positively affect product prices and stimulate the market. In particular, for specific products like high-strength galvanized sheets used in the automotive sector, developing more strategic collaborations between domestic producers and industrial players has become essential. Maintaining Turkey’s export strength in these sectors is critical. To increase exports, domestic producers must always be supported.”

"Türkiye Will Be the Winner of This Process"

“Overall, Türkiye itself will be the winner of this process. There will be domestic producers and thousands of employees, and capacity utilization will increase. I believe unfair competition on imports must end. In conclusion, Türkiye must open the door to a new era in steel trade, focused on regionalization and domestic production. Every country we look at protects its own industry. I am not against imports; I am against unfair competition. It is unacceptable for any country to dump products into our market. We can compete with imported goods under the same conditions, but competition is impossible at extremely low prices.”
