The company will invest 1,350 crore rupees in the facility. The new plant will produce advanced amorphous metal electrical steel, known as Metglas, which is used in distribution transformers.
Amorphous steel reduces core losses in transformers by 20-30% compared to conventional steel, thereby improving energy efficiency. This is aimed at contributing to the reduction of transmission and distribution (T&D) losses in India. The country’s T&D losses are estimated at approximately 290 billion units annually, with 3.55% occurring in transmission and 13.09% in distribution. Experts note that the use of Metglas represents a critical step in reducing these losses and strengthening energy efficiency.
Proterial India has partnered with Shirdi Sai Electricals for the production facility. Shirdi Sai Electricals will hold a 26% stake in the plant and provide integrated supply chain support for transformer manufacturers. The facility is expected to create more than 500 direct jobs.
Proterial, a global leader in amorphous metal electrical steel technology, also operates production facilities in the United States and Japan. The company has been supplying the Indian market for the past 20 years. The new plant will be implemented in alignment with the Indian government’s initiatives to promote specialty steel production. In the third round of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, launched in November 2025, 22 new grades—including amorphous steel—are supported, and Proterial is expected to benefit from this program.
