Italy announced that it is assessing alternative sources to secure its natural gas supply after expected LNG shipments from Qatar could not be delivered. Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said that options include liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the U.S. and pipeline deliveries from Africa and Azerbaijan.
Fratin noted that the production halt in Qatar affects about 9% of Italy’s annual gas consumption but could also impact the global LNG market. Qatar informed Italy’s energy company Edison this week that, due to force majeure, it will be unable to deliver five LNG cargoes scheduled for early April.
Alternative supply options include approximately 400 million cubic meters of LNG per month from the U.S., pipeline gas from Libya and Algeria, and shipments via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) from Azerbaijan. The ministry also cited Mozambique as a potential source, emphasizing that there is no serious supply risk, while the duration and timing of the crisis remain key factors.
The minister added that Italy’s gas storage facilities are over 45% full, double the level in Germany. The government continues to closely monitor prices to prevent spikes and stated that additional measures could be taken if the crisis persists.
