Tata Steel has commissioned a project to use coke oven gas (COG) in the blast furnace at its Meramandali facility in Odisha. Under the project, COG will be used as a reducing agent in the blast furnace process, with the application expected to support the company’s 2045 Net Zero target.
The company stated that the application is a first for the Indian steel industry.
In integrated steel plants, COG, a hydrogen and hydrocarbon rich byproduct gas, is generally used for power generation, heating processes or as a fuel. Under Tata Steel’s new application at Meramandali, COG is injected into the blast furnace for use in the process.
COG injected into blast furnace
Implemented with the support of technology partner Paul Wurth-SMS and equipment supplier Kobelco, the project injects COG into the process through the blast furnace tuyeres. The initiative aims to utilize COG in the blast furnace process and reduce the use of externally sourced fossil fuels.
Subodh Pandey, Vice President of Technology, R&D, NMB and Graphene at Tata Steel, stated that increasing the use of process gases would reduce dependence on externally sourced fossil fuels.
Pandey said the company will continue developing and deploying low carbon technologies and that these efforts will support its progress toward achieving Net Zero by 2045.
Sudhir Kumar Mehta, Vice President of Operations at Tata Steel Meramandali, stated that establishing an efficient application for COG in the blast furnace process would contribute to making operations leaner and cleaner.
The company positioned the project as one of the initiatives increasing the use of low carbon steelmaking technologies at the Meramandali facility.
