Damascus Airport to receive USD 4 billion investment

Turkish contractors are taking significant steps toward helping erase the traces of war in Syria. A consortium that includes Kalyon Construction and Cengiz Construction has signed a strategic cooperation agreement for the rehabilitation of facilities at Damascus International Airport, along with the simultaneous construction of new infrastructure. Under the agreement, valued at USD 4 billion, the airport's annual passenger capacity is planned to increase to 31 million within eight years.

Damascus Airport to receive USD 4 billion investment

Kalyon Holding and Cengiz Holding, which have carried out global-scale investments in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, and transportation both in Türkiye and abroad, have added another major project to their extensive portfolio in Syria.

In the presence of Syrian President Ahmed Shara, a strategic cooperation agreement worth USD 4 billion was signed between the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority and companies including Kalyon Construction and Cengiz Construction from Türkiye, TAV, UCC from Qatar, and Assets Investments from the United States.

As part of the agreement, the consortium that includes Kalyon Construction and Cengiz Construction will rehabilitate the facilities of Damascus International Airport and simultaneously construct new facilities.

With a phased capacity expansion over four stages, the airport’s annual passenger capacity is planned to increase to 31 million within eight years.

Previously Signed a USD 7 Billion Strategic Energy Investment

In May, in the presence of Syrian President Ahmed Shara, a strategic cooperation agreement worth USD 7 billion was signed between the Syrian Ministry of Energy and a consortium including Kalyon Holding and Cengiz Holding from Türkiye, UCC from Qatar, and Power International from the United States.

Under this agreement, a 5000 MW energy investment will be carried out by the consortium, including Kalyon Holding and Cengiz Holding, which is expected to generate approximately 35 billion kWh of electricity annually. This production is intended to cover a significant portion of Syria’s electricity needs.

“Our Investments Will Support Regional Development and Stability, Becoming a Legacy for the Future”

Commenting on the investments in Syria, Kalyon Construction Chairman Murathan Kalyoncu said:
“As a national company, for 81 years we have aimed to leave behind works that future generations can be proud of, placing people at the center of our operations wherever we work. We have always strived to carry out projects that contribute to humanity, nature, and the environment, while representing our country with pride on the international stage.

In this context, we successfully completed Türkiye’s largest infrastructure project, Istanbul Airport, in a record time of 42 months as part of a consortium that included Cengiz Construction. With an annual passenger capacity of 90 million, it has become a global hub and ranked as a world leader.

Now, with our management experience, engineering power, technical capabilities, and solution-oriented approach, we firmly believe we will contribute significantly to transforming Damascus into a regional air transportation hub.

We hope these major investments will mark a turning point for Syria, providing substantial support for regional development and stability.”

“We Will Be a Driving Force for Sustainable Social Life and Economic Development”

Asım Cengiz, Vice Chairman of Cengiz Construction, stated that with their years of international experience, they are continuing to help erase the scars of war in Syria:
“With the projects we undertook in the Karabakh region of our brother country Azerbaijan, we contributed to healing the wounds of war. Now, we are working in our friendly nation Syria to help life return to normal. Through the projects we’ve signed, we are striving to carry the centuries-old friendship between our countries into the future.

Whether in Türkiye or other countries around the world, our priority in all our projects has been to support local development and economic growth. We are now bringing the experience we’ve gained since 1980 to Syria, aiming to be a driving force for sustainable social life and economic development.

In all the projects we undertake, we remain committed to high quality and to representing our country. Moving forward, we will continue to take on projects in our friendly country Syria and contribute to its development.”
