Steel production in France declined in April

French steel producers experienced an 11.2% decline in steel production in April 2024 compared to March.

Steel production in France declined in April

Steel producers, which experienced a decline in April, reduced production to 800 thousand tonnes. In this way, the country ranked 19th in the WorldSteel Association's global ranking of steel producing countries. This decline caused France to fall to 19th place in the global ranking of the World Steel Association (WorldSteel Association). In March 2024, France increased its steel production by 13% compared to February 2023 to 901 thousand tonnes. However, steel production in May was stagnant for all EU countries. Compared to January-April 2023, EU steel production fell by 0.6% to 44.4 million tonnes in the same period of 2024.

The decline in production to 800 thousand tonnes points to a critical period for the sustainability and competitiveness of the sector. In April, French steel production reached its lowest level in 2024, attracting attention.

According to SteelRadar data, compared to steel production in the January-April period of 2023, steel production in the same period of 2024 fell by 0.1% to 3.34 million tonnes. In April 2024, steel production fell by 3.5 per cent compared to the same month in 2023.

It is stated that this decline in France's steel production may be caused by various factors. The increase in energy costs, difficulties in raw material supply and uncertainties in global markets are among the main factors that negatively affect production.
