EUROMETAL stated that the European Commission should take into account the views of all stakeholders in the steel industry and that this process should be more comprehensive. The Commission announced on December 17 last year to begin reviewing various safeguard measures due to the decline in demand for steel in Europe. EUROMETAL highlighted some important points about the review process, noting that the January 10 deadline for the submission of questionnaires is a very restrictive period of time, given the holiday season. The association noted that its members and stakeholders had difficulties in collecting the necessary data and preparing their reports in this limited time.
Another demand was for harmonization of customs legislation across the EU, EUROMETAL argued that customs procedures should be strengthened to ensure fair and consistent enforcement.
The Commission has yet to make a statement on possible changes to safeguard measures, the process is expected to end on March 31.
