Steelmakers investigated for environmental violations in Thailand

Thailand's Ministry of Industry conducted raids on two plants to prevent the production of low-quality steel and illegal activities. The inspections found a number of violations, including environmental impact and unauthorized waste handling.

Steelmakers investigated for environmental violations in Thailand

According to Nation Thailand, the “Sud-Soi” task force, led by Industry Minister Akanat Promphan, conducted inspections last week at Thaixing Steel and Yongxing Steel (Thailand) in Hua Wa Sub-district, Prachinburi Province, Thailand. The inspections were conducted to determine whether the companies complied with legal requirements and product standards.

Initial findings revealed that both factories did not meet regulatory criteria. “We found violations such as environmental impacts, use of unlicensed machinery and illegal waste handling, and we have provided guidance for corrective measures and initiated legal proceedings,” Minister Akanat stated.

The inspections found that waste from Thaixing Steel's cooling water treatment system did not meet environmental standards. Yongxing Steel was also found to have modified machinery without notifying authorities and to have carried out industrial waste-related activities without authorization. These violations are in contravention of Thailand's Factories Act, which carries criminal penalties.

In cooperation with the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) and the Iron and Steel Institute of Thailand (ISIT), the quality of steel products produced by both mills will also be tested. In addition, inspections of Yongxing Steel's imported steel scrap found traces of electronic waste and plastics. 40,000 tons of scrap was seized and registered at the Rabo Phai Police Station for further investigation.

Minister Akanat stated, "As the Sud-Soi task force, our goal is to ensure that companies are in full compliance with all legal regulations. Preventing low-quality steel products and illegal activities is critical to making the industrial sector cleaner, transparent and modernized."
