CEO Gunnar Groebler stated at the “Handelsblatt 2025 Defense as an Economic Factor Conference” held in Düsseldorf on Tuesday that the protective steel market would not be able to offset losses in the weakening automotive industry. However, Groebler emphasized that he sees security steels in this area as an attractive niche market for Salzgitter. Noting that very few companies in Europe have the technical capability to produce such security steels, Groebler stated, “You can count them on one hand.”
Groebler also stated that Salzgitter had begun expanding its special steel business before the war in Ukraine and started using security steels in civilian applications, such as cash-in-transit vehicles and armored limousines. The group has also developed the use of security steels in military applications. “We are very well positioned to meet the demands emerging at the moment,” he emphasized.
