According to the German Steel Federation (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl), total crude steel production in the January–February period covering the first two months of the year reached 5 million 915 thousand tonnes, increasing by 9.9% compared to the same period of the previous year.
On the basis of production routes, in February, oxygen steel production made via the blast furnace method increased by 7.3% to 1 million 972 thousand tonnes, while electric steel production remained at 861 thousand tonnes with a limited decline of 0.4%. In the cumulative total for the first two months of the year, oxygen steel production reached 4 million 184 thousand tonnes with an increase of 13.3%, while electric steel production rose by 2.5% to 1 million 731 thousand tonnes.
In the same period, pig iron production increased by 6.1% in February to 1 million 809 thousand tonnes, while in the January–February total it was recorded at 3 million 848 thousand tonnes with a decrease of 12.5%. Production of hot-rolled steel products increased by 8.3% in February to 2 million 564 thousand tonnes, and in the first two months of the year it rose by 5.7% to 5 million 127 thousand tonnes.
Although production processes across the sector have shown an upward trend since January, it was noted that the total production volume remains below long-term averages.
