Australia imposes 82% tariff on Chinese steel imports

The decision was reportedly approved following an anti-dumping investigation and aims to protect domestic steel producers against low-cost imports.

The tariffs on hot-rolled steel coil imports were introduced after authorities determined that Chinese producers had entered the Australian market through state support mechanisms and low-priced exports.

According to the findings of the investigation, the imports in question created price pressure on domestic producers and negatively affected profitability levels.

It was stated that the anti-dumping duties were imposed to offset the competitive advantage created through subsidies and below-cost pricing.

Authorities also noted that similar trade defense measures had previously been implemented against other Chinese steel products, including bolts, angle sections, and ceiling frames.

Officials stated that the new tariffs would apply to specified products and exporters within the framework of the country’s existing trade defense regulations.
