The first batch of SSAB Zero steel, which is made from recycled materials and has virtually no carbon emissions, will be delivered later this year and will be used in Alstom's next generation Traxx Shunter locomotives.
Christophe Gourlay, Alstom's purchasing manager, stated in a statement on the partnership that SSAB's supply of low carbon emission steel will support the company's goal of reducing the carbon footprint of its supply chain by 30% by 2030. With this step, Alstom aims to significantly reduce the embodied carbon emissions of the materials used in locomotive platforms, while strengthening its commitment to the use of sustainable materials in the railway sector.
Huy Nguyen, SSAB's Sales Director for Southern Europe, emphasized that the cooperation with Alstom is part of their goal of fossil-free steel production and creating a carbon-neutral supply chain. Nguyen stated that SSAB has a clear and ambitious vision to eliminate CO2 emissions from the steelmaking process.
This partnership stands out as one of the important steps taken to reduce the carbon footprint in the railway sector and is part of Alstom's sustainable supply strategy. This environmentally friendly steel to be used in Traxx Shunter locomotives aims to minimize the impact on the environment with lower carbon emissions in rail transportation.
