Tata Steel decides to invest for construction of electric arc furnace

Tata Steel UK announced that following discussions with UK trade unions, it has decided to close the existing blast furnaces at its steel plant in Talbot Harbour and replace them with an electric arc furnace (EAF).

The company announced that blast furnace No. 5 at the Talbot site will be closed by the end of June, while blast furnace No. 4 will be closed by the end of September. However, in agreement with the UK government, it has decided to invest EUR 1.25 billion to build a cutting-edge electric arc furnace at the facility.

It is estimated to take several weeks to finalize the final documents and the company announced that construction of the EAF will start in August 2025, with operations scheduled to be operational by the end of 2027. It also indicated that it had accepted National Grid's revised offer.

SteelRadar sources emphasized that the EAF conversion at Tata Steel facilities will be one of the major investments in UK steel production and will create 5,000 jobs at Tata Steel.
